From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Interpersonal communication is the process of sending and receiving information between two or more people. Communication is interpersonal when the people involved are contacting each other as persons, on a personal level.
Direct channels are those that are obvious, and can be easily recognized by the receiver. They are also under direct control of the sender. In this category are the verbal and non-verbal channels of communication. Verbal communication channels are those that use words in some manner, such as written communication or spoken communication. Non-verbal communication channels are those that do not require words, such as certain overt facial expressions, controllable body movements (such as that made by a traffic police to control traffic at an intersection), color (red for danger, green means go etc), sound (sirens, alarms etc.).
so, as we all know, a smile is an interpersonal nonverbal communication.
when you smile, it somehow indicates that you recognize the person even though you were not friends but have seen each other a lot of times. it also tells the person that he is free to approach and talk to you.
when you smile to your friends, it may mean a greeting "hi!" , or simply "i'm okay.."
when you smile to your parents/relatives when you arrive home accompanied by a "mano po..", you pay respect to them(and that usually makes them happy)
when you smile to your crush, that may mean "can i talk to you?" and if he smiles back, then you know it's alright with him to have small conversation.(if your crush happen to know you!)
when you see your enemy and you're with your friends, you smile wickedly (don't you?)
You see, a smile has different meanings.it may be a friendly smile, a flirty smile, or a sarcastic smile, either way you recognize it as what it is.
